Are You Prepared to Be a Safe Co Rider?
Do you have the knowledge it takes to be a responsible motorcycle Co rider? Motorcycle riding can be fun but there is also a lot of care and responsibility involved. The challenge of accepting a ride may be rewarding but there are many things to consider.
Communication:
Here are some guidelines for Co riders. Can you trust the rider to be safe and have good riding skills. Do not be afraid to ask about safety and riding habits before accepting a ride.
Before heading out on the road, you will need to establish some form of communication with your rider. Coordinate with your rider what certain hand signals will represent, shoulder taps will be used for and if possible any types of verbal communication. There’s also the option of Blue Tooth devices that can be worn inside your helmet for better communication.
Protection:
You need to be well protected before venturing out on any ride. Eye protection is a must and is also the law. A good quality pair of riding sunglasses or goggles will protect you from the hot sun and any loose road debris. If you are riding at night it is always helpful to have a pair of clear riding goggles to see the road signs more clearly. A DOT rated motorcycle helmet is also recommended and is the law in many states. The fit of the motorcycle helmet should be snug on your head so as not to fall off in any crash.
Quality leather motorcycle apparel should always be worn on any ride. A padded leather motorcycle jacket with a proper fit and a set of leather chaps with ankle length riding boots are recommended. For longer road trips, a lightweight reflective rain suit should always be on hand.
You should also have a good pair of leather riding gloves for the different types of weather conditions and for safety.
There are many different types of leather motorcycle jackets, vests and chaps on the market so you can look fashionable and also be protected at the same time. Never wear shorts or cut offs.
Motorcycle:
The motorcycle should be in good operating condition. A quick inspection of tires for adequate tread in the event of wet roads and proper inflation for the handling of an additional rider is always important.
The First Time Co Rider
If you are a first time Co rider, here are some tips to consider before riding on the back of a motorcycle. You should be instructed on how to properly get on and off the bike so as not to burn yourself. The rider should inform you how to sit properly, where to place your feet and where to hold on. You should also be well rested, wear a leather motorcycle jacket, chaps and or jeans and a motorcycle helmet before going out on any ride.
Summary:
Just as in any type of motor sport participation there are safety issues to be addressed. Communication assures rider and Co rider are on the same page and protection is in everyone's best interest. In learning these few important tips and techniques, you will have a safe and rewarding experience as a Co rider as well as enjoy your ride.
